City Honors Music Legend Chuck Brown at Street Renaming Ceremony; 930 Club to Host the Artist's 73rd Birthday Concert on Saturday, August 22nd
NEW ALBUM UNDER DEVELOPMENT, CONCERT TO BE FILMED
Washington, D.C. -- Washingtonians will come together to celebrate DC's Godfather of Go-Go, DC Legend and Music Icon Chuck Brown at the city's street sign unveiling of Chuck Brown Way on Saturday, August 22nd, the artist's birthday. The street ceremony in Brown's honor will start at 4 p.m. at 7th and T Streets, NW. Local food vendors, radio stations and a moon bounce for kids will create a block party atmosphere for the sign's unveiling. Fans will be able to have their picture taken with Mr. Brown.
The street ceremony and party will be followed by a major birthday concert at the 930 Club. Brown's celebration will be in full swing when he takes the club's stage for what has become an annual tradition at the 930 Club for nine consecutive years. The event is being filmed for a future release of the artist, who is credited with raising four generations of Washingtonians on his sound. Brown shares a birthday with two other Washington institutions: Ben's Chili Bowl (51st anniversary) and The Howard Theatre (99th anniversary). Comedian Huggy Lowdown (heard on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show daily) and friends will open the show.
A resolution to rename the street in honor of Brown was introduced in the DC City Council by Council Member Jim Graham and co-introduced by Chairman Vincent Gray, Council Members Harry Thomas Jr., Marion Barry, Kwame Brown and Yvette Alexander, and adopted earlier this year.
A true musical innovator still at the top of his game, Brown is the inventor of Go-Go, a mix of Latin style percussion, "paint bucket" street corner rhythms, and American Jazz and Soul laid over an unrelenting Funk groove. He continues to bring the house down with his live show, drawing rave reviews recently at the Hampton Jazz Festival, New York's River to River Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Between live performances, Brown is in the studio working again with hit maker Chucky Thompson on a new album.
