Since the lottery's inception in 1982, our total contribution has been over $1.5 billion to the District's General Fund. The D.C. Lottery directly benefits our players by paying out more than 50 percent of annual sales in prize money. We also directly benefit local businesses by providing commissions to retailers licensed to sell D.C. Lottery games!
In Fiscal Year 2008, the agency transferred $70.3 million to the District of Columbia's General Fund. Revenue generated by the D.C. Lottery is vital to making our city a better place for the nearly 600,000 District residents in addition to the millions of commuters and tourists who visit the Nation's Capital daily and play the D.C. Lottery. Allocated by the Mayor with the consent of the Council of the District of Columbia, General Fund monies are used to support essential city services such as public safety, education, health services, public works, and economic development.
As we look to Fiscal Year 2009, the D.C. Lottery will continue to provide its players with great games and customer service, be a responsible and committed community partner, and contribute to the quality of life of District of Columbia residents. A special "thank you" to our players, agents, advisory board, and staff. Your dedication has provided us the opportunity to demonstrate that Lots of People Win with the D.C. Lottery!!
